THE SEXUAL INSTINCT: INTERNAL & EXTERNAL STIMULUSES Contrary to popular opinion, human beings do not possess a highly specific sexual instinct that guides them infallibly to normal expression of the impulse. Of course, when the stimulation of the genital organs through physical contact has reached a certain point, there is a series of reflexes which occur that are highly specific and partly involuntary. But, apart from these bodily reflexes, the instinct is very vaguely defined. Sexual interest is capable of attaching itself to almost any object, and the specific object upon which it hits in its earliest stages depends upon the many accidents of one's experience and training. The sexual impulse, like some other reactions in man and the animals, is a three-cornered affair, consisting of (1) an internal stimulus, (2) an external stimulus, and (3) a motor response. In order to produce the complete sexual reaction, both the internal stimulus and external stimulus must be present. This will be clearer after the two stimuli and the various phases of the motor response have been described. *54\275\8* Men's Health-Erectile Dysfunction |
