CROSS-CULTURAL COMPARISONS: BIRTH CONTROL PRACTICES Davenport (1976) has pointed out that there is probably no society in the world that does not attempt to use some type of birth control method in certain circumstances In many primitive societies, these attempts often entail the use of magical or symbolic potions and practices, the effectiveness of which is questionable at best. Abstinence is used by some societies. Even more widespread is the practice of coitus interruptus, or withdrawal of the penis from the vagina just before ejaculation. This practice is also very unreliable. Davenport suggests that one reason abstinence or coitus interruptus is so commonly practiced in many primitive societies is that both methods can become a part of the culture simply by the awareness that conception results from the injection of ejaculate into the vagina. All societies, except perhaps a very few, seem to possess this simple knowledge. *54\265\8* Men's Health-Erectile Dysfunction |
